Mainboards gibt es in den Grössen absteigend sortiert:

• ATX (Intel 1996; 305 mm x 244 mm)
• mini-ATX (284 mm x 208 mm)
• micro-ATX (1996; 244 mm x 244 mm)
• flex-ATX (1999; 244 x 244 mm max.)
• mini-ITX (VIA Technologies 2003; 170mm x 170mm max.; 100W max.)
• nano-ITX (VIA Technologies 2004; 120mm x 120mm max.)

und nicht genormten Sondergrössen, z.b. in Barebones oder HTPCs.

Die meisten Mainboards sind aufwärtskompatibel, d.h. man kann ein mini-ITX Board auch in eine micro-ATX Gehäuse einbauen, es bleibt halt ne Menge Platz übrig.

Gehäuse und Netzteil müssen unbedingt zu diesen Grössen passen.

Ausserdem diktieren die Mainboards den verwendbaren Prozessor und Speicher sowie die Anzahl der DVB-Karten.

Die mini-ITX und nano-ITX Formfaktoren wurden von der taiwanesichen Firma VIA genormt. Deren Mainboards bringen die CPU fest aufgelötet mit. Bis zu einer Taktzahl von 800 Mhz sogar passiv gekühlt ohne Lüfter.
